Óscar Arnulfo Romero was an El Salvadoran bishop and peace activist. He was assassinated on March 24, 1980
while giving Mass by the government controlled death squad, which systematically carried out
politically-motivated assassinations and other human rights abuses.

The United States supported the El Salvadoran Civil War both financially and with military aid, some
reports estimate that as much as $1.5 million a day were given to the El Salvadoran government during
the peak of the war.
